HOLLAND TOUR SUCCESS

HOLLAND TOUR SUCCESS

Tim Wareing, Director of TWAcademy.Org, organised a tour for 25 boys & parents to travel to Holland.  The tour arrangements were organised by Tim's close friend & top Dutch Coach, Bert-Jan (BJ) Heijmans.  The tour brought together a selection of boys from over 6 different boys & Irish League clubs.  The tour offered an opportunity to live the life of a professional during the 4 day training camp.

After a great flight from Belfast International to Schiphol Amsterdam we were met by a luxurious coach & good friend BJ.  We transferred to Den Bosch to our base at the 4* Hotel Vaught.  After checking into our rooms & unpacking we met up for a team meeting.  BJ took the opportunity to welcome everyone & explain in full the weekend ahead.  The squad then enjoyed a meal together before having a stroll to the old town.  The boys then headed to their rooms for a well deserved rest.

Saturday morning the team met for breakfast before transferring to VV Eindhoven, this is a feeder team of PSV Eindhoven.  After a team talk & warm up the boys took to the field for what would turn out to be an excellent performance & very entertaining game.

Eindhoven v TWAcademy.Org, Saturday

The match was played in 3 periods of 25 minutes.  During the first period we had a number of great chances created by some fast flowing football.  Unfortunately Mackie, Stewart & McCrory couldn't break the deadlock.  Against the run of play, & right before the first break, Eindhoven scored to go 1-0 up.  A very cool finish by the Eindhoven forward.

The second period was very exciting.  Mackie scored probably one of the hardest of his opportunities by finishing well with a volley to make the score 1-1.  More excitement was to follow after a free kick was awarded on the edge of the Eindhoven box.  Ryan McCrory stepped up to score a marvellous free kick into the right hand corner of the goal, 2-1 to TWAcademy!

All the goals seemed to be saved for the final period.  Eindhoven equalised, making the score 2-2.  Soon after Luke Fisher received the ball on the half way line & beat 2 players as if they weren't there.  He then outsprinted the covering defender before cutting inside & finishing with a lethal right foot finish, 3-2.  TWAcademy then took control with Mikey Crawford taking a well worked goal, 4-2.  The temperature continued to rise & some tired legs started to show.  Although it was the heads to go first, switching off from a corner Eindhoven pulled a goal back.  A number of the Academy players were frustrated & ran to the referee claiming that the corner was taken half way between near post & corner flag.  To their frustration this is allowed in Holland.  Again this shows how they tailor the game to the children in Holland.

With minutes remaining the talented PSV Eindhoven forward finished brilliantly to make the final score 4-4.  What a great performance by the young boys.  The scouts watching were very impressed & will monitor a number of the TWAcademy players.

Philips Stadium

After the game we enjoyed lunch on the executive bus that the Premiership teams use for games.  We transferred to PSV Eindhoven's ground, The Philips Stadium.  Our tour guide was very friendly, informative & interested in our party.  We got pitch side, taken through the changing rooms, media room & executive seating area.  We walked the corridors that many famous players & managers of the past have done.  This includes the great Sir Bobby Robson & players such as Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Before returning to the hotel we had opportunity to purchase some PSV gear in their shop.

Evening Session

BJ then took the boys for a training session at a fantastic indoor arena owned by our friend Martien Pennings.  Martien is a head scout at PSV & travelled over to Belfast to operate a clinic for coaches for TWSports.Org.

BJ's session involved all the players & each of them always had a ball.  You can view these sessions on a DVD that will be produced from our trip.  For more information contact Tim on, 077 4012 0788.

Helmond Sport v TWAcademy.Org, Sunday

After breakfast we transferred to Dutch First Division side, Helmond Sport.  With the first team being away we had the opportunity to play in the first team stadium, a 5000 all seater stadium!  What a great experience for the boys.  The pitch was shortened & smaller goals placed on either 18 yard line.  Again proving why the Dutch are more technically gifted & offer a more child friendly approach.

The game was quite one sided with TWAcademy.Org recording a great 10-1 win.  Although the Dutch counter parts were younger, played some nice football & never gave in.  Again a number of the TWAcademy players attracted interest.

The game finished with everyone hitting a penalty.  In both games our Dutch counterparts offered us all the balls, bibs, cones & water we required for our warm up.  We had showers & changing rooms & a club room for tea & coffee.

Dutch Taste

After the game we went to the local chippy to discover the Dutch equivalent to fish & chips!  Although some of the kids were not fussed on some of the items the parents & coaching team enjoyed it!

We then went for a game of bowls before transferring back to the Philips Stadium to watch PSV Eindhoven v AZ.  After a non eventful first half the second half improved & we cheered PSV on to a 2-1 victory.

After a very busy, but very enjoyable couple of days, we enjoyed a free night in the hotel.  Along with BJ & Danny we carried out player analysis after dinner.  This offered a 1-to-1 informative chat with each player to add to their game & how they can improve on any weaknesses.

PSV Eindhoven First Team Training, Monday

After breakfast we boarded the bus with our luggage sad knowing that it was our last day in Holland.  But to cheer us up BJ had organised another fantastic day!  We arrived at the first team training ground of PSV.  We saw a couple of first team & reserve team players train.  They also took the time to speak with us, sign autographs & pose for photos.

They also had their academy players in for a week of professional training.  2 sessions daily, basically training as a first team player.  It was fascinating to watch.  Kids had the freedom to train & coaches got down to their level & made it fun but always high tempo & use of the ball.

Hans Segers

I think the highlight was meeting ex Wimbledon keeper (aka crazy gang!) Hans Segers.  He is now a goalkeeper coach at PSV & organised a penalty shoot out for the boys against the PSV keeper!

It hit home to everyone - players & parents - to what I have been saying over the past number of years.  In Holland everyone is so approachable & down to earth.  There are no big egos or super stars.  This was our final meeting at PSV at what a way to finish on!

Ajax, Amsterdam ArenA

Before making our way back to the airport we stopped off to enjoy a stadium tour of Ajax at the Amsterdam ArenA.  We also had time to view the historic museum of this great European club.

On our way back to the airport our captains, Luke Fisher & Keegan Rice, presented BJ & our coach driver with gifts & made a speech through the microphone on the coach.  They spoke very well & it was very moving for BJ to have 2 young boys speak so well.

Observations

This was my fourth time in Holland.  So was great to meet up with friends & for so many parents & boys to see my love for the country & philosophy so much.  The boys & parents mixed so well.  It shows the training each week at the Academy really does add to their games along with what they receive outside of that.  In Holland boys of 11 & 12 will train up to 4 times per week.  In Northern Ireland the reality is once weekly, maybe twice.  This is why children attending the TWAcademy don't only benefit from another session but the quality coaching & opportunities they receive really does add to their game.

Another massive difference is that the Dutch continue to work with players & always keeping them at a level that suits.  While Premiership clubs (& youth teams in NI) replace up to 50% of their players it is no surprise long term development is not available & more & more players are leaving the game.

The DVD features BJ's analysis on this & what he thinks about TWAcademy.  If you want to hear more & watch more sign up to our Facebook page & You Tube channel.

Future

The boys will continue to train with myself on a weekly basis.  Some also have booked & continue to avail of my 1-on-1 coaching.  We will return to Holland.  We also have an invite from Portugal.  Short term we will look at taking the boys over to visit BJ in Durham & play his side as well as Sunderland or Newcastle.

We also hope to organise player & coach exchange between TWAcademy & in Holland.  Many of our players attracted interest.  So if you would like to find out more about getting your child involved simply contact me now, 077 4012 0788 or by email.

Thanks

TWAcademy.Org would like to thank our sponsors; Absolute Marketing, Grounded Espresso Bars & Kaizen Print.  We extend our thanks to all the children & parents for their support.  Finally we thank all the clubs & people in Holland that welcomed us along with BJ who put together one magical experience!

NEW YORK, NEW YORK!

NEW YORK, NEW YORK!

We received a lovely email from a fantastic family that flew from New York to specially attend our Easter Camp & the Benfica Way Clinics...

Dear Coach Tim & Co,

With this note we wanted to extend you a special thanks for inviting us to the TW Sports Easter soccer camp & "The Benfica Way" coaching / training sessions, which were organised by you.

Thank you for opening your home to us and your hospitality.  We had an amazing time thanks to you, your crew & your soon wife to be, Leanne, who tirelessly looked after us, entertained us, constantly making sure we were ok & also without forgetting your wonderful and supportive parents, thank you!

Don’t get me wrong, coach Tim, you were a brilliant entertainer as well :)  I never got tired speaking with you about football, quality of coaching, quality of play & youth development.  You & I share the same idea on starting youth development in football from an early age.  Hassan had an amazing time & experience while training at the TW Sports as well as "The Benfica Way" training sessions.

One of the special moments for Hassan was making new friends, thanks to Cameron for being there for Hassan, Luke, it was very nice to meet him as well & to all participants of TW Sports Easter soccer camp – you guys were brilliant!!  It was very nice to meet everyone & play football with!!!

“The Benfica Way” coaching / player sessions were invaluable.  We basically had "Benfica" youth coaches all to ourselves, one on one, now how often does that happen?  With that said we brought back home more knowledge, unforgettable memories & fresh new ideas.

Thank you again & in football united we stand!

IMPROVE YOUR GAME!

IMPROVE YOUR GAME!

Zoe Salmon has already backed our Award Winning programme saying, 'You are doing such a great job, providing such a fab facility for boys & girls of NI'.  Now Hugo Vicente of SL Benfica has echoed Zoe's words by stating in a recent presentation, 'The sooner a child is introduced to football the stronger technically they will become.  While more practice time will assist in each players development'.

Luke joined a TWSports.Org Mini Soccer Centre from an early age.  He has developed into a very talented player.  Early exposure to the ball, additional practice time, a great attitude & work ethic along with a supporting family has seen huge developments in his game.

Director of TWSports.Org, Tim Wareing, works 1-on-1 with Luke 2-3 times per week.  You can see Luke in action here.  This video was filmed August 2009 when Luke was 10. In September 2009 he was selected for the National IFA County Down squad. He was also scouted for Liverpool FC. He attends their Academy on a weekly basis based in Belfast.

Our programme caters for all levels.  Even if your child plays for a team the additional practice time & our expert coaching will help develop their talent.

PRIVATE 1-ON-1 COACHING WITH BENFICA

PRIVATE 1-ON-1 COACHING WITH BENFICA

SL Benfica coaches, Hugo Vicente & Edgar, delivered a special private coaching class.  This was for TWSports.Org Director, Tim Wareing's private 1-on-1 students.

The session was heavily based on technical work & use of the ball.  From skills & turns to 1 v 1 duels the boys involved had a terrific session & wonderful experience.

Hugo started the session with a ball for each of the 5 children present.  Moving through a series of dribbling, skills, turns & keep ball the session then developed to concentrate on touch, decision making & speed.

This included a fantastic high speed drill that had each boy work on their touch & passing technique using the inside & then the outside of their feet.  The session then developed nicely into S.A.Q. using the speed ladder but insuring the ball was never far away.

A series of 1 v 1 drills was then introduced encouraging the player to make their move against the line defender before finishing into the net as directed by fellow coach Edgar.

The session was filmed & the boys enjoyed finishing with Crossbar Challenge.  We hope to bring you some footage through our You Tube Channel that you can subscribe to here.

We thank Hugo Vicente & Edgar for taking time out of their busy schedule to offer the 5 boys an unforgettable experience.  Not many children get the opportunity to be coached by top European coaches in their own wee country!

For more information on 1-on-1 coaching or small private group coaching contact Tim Wareing on, 077 4012 0788 or by email.

EASTER CAMP REVIEW

EASTER CAMP REVIEW

Over 50 children enjoyed TWSports.Org Easter Elite & Mini Soccer Camp at Civil Service Club in Dundonald.  While a further 15 toddlers enjoyed the Toddler Soccer Road Show!

The camp was organised by UEFA A Licence Coach & TWSports.Org Director, Tim Wareing.   He was joined by Ronnie Cromie who also holds his A Licence & Coach Danny Johnson.  The Dream Team was complimented by Coach Andy & Coach Kyle.

Children were put into groups that complimented their ability & age meaning maximum development & enjoyment.  The sessions were based on the latest in European development that improved every child in attendance.  Leading to better technical ability & game understanding.

Along with the quality coaching a series of small sided games were played throughout the week.  With the elite group we focused on small sided games reflecting the Champions League games involving Barcelona & Manchester United.  This worked in well with basing the session around passing & support play in triangles for Barcelona & then the next day concentrating on the Manchester United style.  This was done through width using the wingers & speed of play.

Lunch hour included our theme days of crazy hair, design a footy top & make your own footy card day.  Along with watching some DVD's including the technical training of PSV Eindhoven.

All players perfected the 'Bergkamp' & 'Henry' in beating a defender & finishing on goal.

The week also included a Soccer Sixes tournament on the Thursday evening before the Benfica coaches visited the children & signed autographs on the Friday.

You can register to our You Tube channel to watch our latest videos by following this link.  To find out more about our weekly centres or Summer Fun Camps please contact us on 077 4012 0788 or by email.

SL BENFICA REVIEW

SL BENFICA REVIEW

TWSports.Org was pleased to welcome Benfica to Northern Ireland.  Hugo Vicente & Edgar delivered quality clinics for local children & coaches, 'The Benfica Way'.

The action kicked off at the Ballymena United Showground's with clinics for children aged 5-16.  The talented Ballymena U16 team attended in the evening to receive coaching during the coaching clinic.

The clinics then travelled to Belfast to Orangefield OB.  Again sessions were provided for children aged 5-16 before the coaches clinic.  Orangefield U19's had the privilege of receiving coaching from the Benfica coaches.  Last year the same squad were coached by PSV Eindhoven, another event organised by TWSports.Org.

The sessions for children were all ball related, fun & pressurised focusing heavily on the technical side of the game that has helped produce one of the best footballers in the world, Ronaldo.

One thing that was evident throughout all the sessions was the fun that the Benfica coaches had with the children.  They really did get down to the kids level but at the same time didn't lose any quality.

The coaches clinics were fascinating too.  A presentation on Benfica's youth system & senior set up developing to how they teach their youth players the game.  Many things covered was getting rid of the silly warm ups & 'Premiership warm ups' that we see so many 'coaches' performing.  How you can lose 1 year development in the process of developing young players through 'silly warm ups'.  How the game has changed, especially the speed & endurance in the last 30 years.

After the presentations, Hugo Vicente conducted the sessions that coaches in attendance gained valuable sessions & training advice.

The weekend was a huge success.  One parent commented how his child gained more out of a 90 minute session than they would have received in 3 months from their club!

Tim Wareing commented, 'It is a pleasure to have Hugo & Edgar from Benfica with us again in Northern Ireland.  In the past year we have attracted Benfica to travel to Northern Ireland twice & PSV Eindhoven.  For these top European coaches to share their ideas & methods to all local children & coaches is amazing.  It helps continue to develop the local game & the children & coaches involved within.'

Wareing continued, 'It is a shame that so many missed the opportunity or lacked the desire to learn & develop their game understanding.  Too many people within the local game don't seem to want to better themselves.  This was proved to me by Academy coaches from an Irish League Club ignore the opportunity to watch a session led by the Benfica coaches straight after their game!'

'We had a family that flew in from New York especially to attend these courses.  Yet some people wouldn't drive (or walk!) 5 minutes down the road to attend.  Unfortunately this is one real reason why the overall standard of the local game doesn't move forward.'

'What is interesting is the thoughts from the Benfica coaches.  In terms of the facilities that they seen they were impressed.  Many junior & amateur clubs still play on sand & clay courts in Portugal.  The main differences they noticed in the game in Northern Ireland was the physical side & lower level of technical ability of the players.'

'They also seen a big culture difference in that players, especially children, were afraid to take risks & take players on.  They could immediately see why with the distraction from the 'coaches' & parents on the touch line.'

TWSports.Org would like to thank Hugo Vicente & Edgar from Benfica for sharing their knowledge & passion of the game.  Thank you to Ballymena United & Orangefield OB for the use of their fantastic facilities.  We also extend our thanks to our sponsor, Absolute Marketing.  Finally to all the children, parents & coaches that supported the event.

If you would like to receive more details of future courses please contact us by telephone, 077 4012 0788 or by email.  You can register to our You Tube page to be the first to see the footage from the clinics.  Simply click here.

1-ON-1 COACHING

1-ON-1 COACHING

My schedule is booking up fast for private 1-on-1 coaching.  My only available day during the week is a Thursday along with limited availability on weekends.  Obviously from the spring I can accept more children on a 1-to-1 basis.

I am very excited about starting work today with a new child.  It's something that I enjoy a lot & the progress that Luke has made is outstanding.  Luke continues his sessions with me after starting back in May.

He currently is playing for the National County Down Squad & attends the Liverpool Academy based here in Belfast.  A number of high profile clubs continue to watch his progress.

We filmed the footage from our 1-on-1 sessions & you can view them by clicking here on video 1 or video 2.  This is footage from August; Luke's development has come on even more in this short space of time!

Why 1-on-1 Coaching?

It's amazing how extra coaching, 1-on-1, a good attitude & having fun can improve a player.  Add in goal setting & You Tube & you have a great, motivated player!

1-on-1 coaching isn't the first thing on parent's lists in Northern Ireland but I feel it should be if you really want your child to improve their technical ability.  If your child struggles with maths or reading you will look for extra classes or tuition.

If a child falls behind or is weaker than the 'big kids' the youth 'coaches' & 'Managers' of the team leave them out.  They offer the last 5 minutes of games if they are lucky.  The result?  The child falls further behind & eventually leaves the game.

So, what do I work on during a 1-on-1 session?  I love to concentrate on the technical side of the game.  Skills & tricks, touch, passing & finishing.  I also throw in a lot of fun activities too.  Repetition is good but I also like to include some fresh ideas.

From the skills grid & PSV warm up to the 10 team mates passing game.  We then focus on our mini pitch & mini goals & undertake first touch, control the Raul spoon, finish & pass through hoop game.  A series of finishing games we have introduced along with fun games like lob the keeper & crossbar challenge.

So many games that we use & work on.  We always finish on the hoop game!  I stand one side, Luke on the other & we both have a number of balls.  His dad then rolls a set of hoops down the hill & we have to shoot / pass the ball through them.  Great fun to finish the night on!

It is a testament to the work he puts in.  But we don't finish on the training pitch.  Luke has homework to do, set himself goals & research using the web.

We set homework together but he can gain more sessions & information from TrainingSoccer.Org & TWAcademy.Org.  This includes training sessions, diet, fitness, preparation & psychology.

We have also set goals from when we started.  It's important all players have long term goals to aim for but essential they have short term goals that they can achieve along the way & something to aim for.  We simply used a blank bit of paper & listed strengths & weaknesses.  How we would improve on our (notice I always use 'our' as we work together as a team) weaknesses.  We then have short term goals like playing x amount of games creating goals or scoring goals.  We also have improvements on keepie ups.  But you always need to be realistic & insure the short term goals are achievable.  If Luke can do 30 keepie ups it's better for him to target 35 than 40 as his next goal as he can see & touch it easier than a larger amount.

At the same time if he targets to set up 6 goals over the course of February you have to remind him that he can only provide a great pass or cross but the forward may not score it.  So you have to be realistic & positive.  The long term goal?  Well this can be play for an English Club side, Northern Ireland, anything!  But if the individual doesn't put the work in I can question him as can his parents.

Finally we always name tricks & games after players or teams.  I also encourage Luke to look up You Tube to see them in action (my good friend Hugo Vicente from SL Benfica does this with his players).  This adds to a child's mind & visualises it better, often exciting them & motivating them even more.

In our last session we adapted a session to finish like Bergkamp.  I'm sure you remember his great goal for Arsenal against Newcastle?  The ball played into him & he spun it one way & rolled off the defender the other to score one of the great goals!  Check it out hereWhat a player!

Luke's Story...

Luke started with TWSports.Org Mini Soccer at the age of 6 at our Civil Service club.

He plays for a local boys club but I also work with him, 1-on-1, 2-3 times per week.  The additional coaching hours has really helped improve his overall technical ability & game understanding.  This has combined well with his clubs training.

Luke started May 2009.  He already was very talented but only one footed.  In the space of 1-2 months we had Luke using both feet.

We also worked together on a Personal Development Programme (PDP).  This sets short & long term goals.

By September 2009 Luke was selected for the National County Down squad & scouted for Liverpool FC.

FOOTBALL UNITES WORLD

FOOTBALL UNITES WORLD

What better way to spend New Year's Day than feature in a short film at Titanic Quarter.  Colin Graham, from Bangor, wanted to feature children playing football in a real iconic area of Belfast.  What better venue than the ship yard!

The idea is that one of the boys will control a pass hit from kid in Brazil & then drive a pass to kid in Calcutta!

This is a very exciting project that asks people from all around the world to film in a famous area of their city & then put it all together to have children playing football.

Showing that football unites the world regardless of religion, gender, cultural background, war or poverty.

We hope to feature un-edit & edit versions on our You Tube Channel.

STORMONT

STORMONT

Tim Wareing attended the SkillsActive 5th Anniversary Event at Stormont Parliament Buildings.  It was hosted by Sir Reg Empey, MLA, Minister for Employment & Learning.

SkillsActive is the sector skills council for the active leisure & learning industry.  SkillsActive is based throughout Northern Ireland, England, Scotland & Wales.

It is a programme that we are happy to get involved in like the involvement we have with the Princes Trust.  Although we have forced limitations thanks to some of the Councils around Northern Ireland.

A number of Council's will not allow our Award Winning programme to operate in their Leisure Centres, or charge over £100 per week hire for ONE 45 minute slot!  In the worst economy for over 100 years you would think we would receive support from the so called powers that be.

During July & August we offered a number of positions for free lance coaches.  We had over 100 applications.  This ranged from experienced coaches right down to school leavers & the un-employed.  We catered positions for all.  Although due to the fact that Belfast City Council do not support our programme (by 'support' we mean accept a slot in one of many Leisure Centres that are currently losing money) it resulted in less positions being made available as there was not the hours available.

The SkillsActive event was set in one of Northern Ireland's most famous landmarks.  A number of high profile speakers & guests were invited along.  Although apart from Cathy Mullan, (Health Promotion Commissioner, Public Health Agency) it was just a glorified thank you function.  The kind involving a speech, thank you, photo for the paper, done.  Cathy spoke about today's children not being able to play like we as parents enjoyed growing up.  The huge problem of child obesity - A NUMBER OF PARENTS WILL OUTLIVE THEIR CHILDREN!  Finally touching on the mental health problems that will face a huge percentage of our children in the next 20 years.

These are 3 topics that you will find we reported on if you search the archived news in TrainingSoccer.Org over the past year.

But while so many speakers concentrated on the big 'love in' Cathy actually spoke about facts that there is no way of avoiding.  It is just a shame that the Council's from the country in Europe with the highest death rate from heart disease will not support a programme that brings toddlers from 2.5 along with their parents to football & the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

Unfortunately no one was around to speak to about the above.  Perhaps if a camera was about they would have happily 'staged' a conversation to get that all important picture in the press of, 'I care.'

THE BENFICA WAY DVD

THE BENFICA WAY DVD

TWSports.Org has just released its third DVD.  This DVD captures the sessions & seminar from 'The Benfica Way'.  Hugo Vicente from the SL Benfica Academy visited TWSports during August.  His seminar & sessions were captured & put together in this professional DVD set.

If you want to hear & watch how the most successful Portuguese Club side develop their players this is a must buy!  This acts as the perfect Christmas present whether your child took part in the sessions, your child has an interest in football or you are a coach.

I can honestly say I enjoyed watching the DVD back nearly as much as being at the course itself.  We have produced a training session DVD.  Although if you want to capture the full seminar we have produced a second DVD to feature both!

Watch & listen to how SL Benfica produces their players through technical & pressurised drills.  Hugo Vicente talks about the time wasted doing silly warm ups & brings interesting facts to play with regard to how speed has changed in the game & how they go about improving it.

This DVD is a must see!  You can watch a teaser clip here.  Limited edition so be sure to order here!

SL Benfica & Hugo Vicente will return to Belfast in April 2010.  Be sure to register your interest now!  Email or telephone, 077 4012 0788.

SL BENFICA SUCCESS

SL BENFICA SUCCESS

Hugo Vicente & Victor from SL Benfica flew in to Northern Ireland to deliver an elite training session for local children in conjunction with TWAcademy.Org.

Dundela FC kindly opened up Wilgar Park for the clinic to take place.  The weather was even kind to us, sunshine the whole day.  Although on arrival Victor had to jump back into the van as he was that cold after leaving the sunshine & 30 degree heat in Portugal.  Hugo on the other hand had climatised with a week in Scotland!

Hugo & Victor then took to the pitch to provide a coaching session for the children.  After introductions & a brief insight into Portuguese football the action kicked off.  What was evident throughout the entire session was use of the ball & a great repore with children.

The session was full of energy, passion, personality & of course knowledge.  The children worked hard but always had a smile of their face.  The session featured heavily on the technical side of the game but was pressurised.

Some of the feedback we received;

'Tim, just a short note to congratulate you on a most fantastic day today.  Both my boys had a great time & they were extremely inspired by the tuition given all day.  You are definitely in the right job as all the kids adore you & all your efforts are appreciated.'

Murray Erskine

'Hello Tim, we just wanted to thank you for such a brilliant footie day yesterday with the Benfica coaches.  Reece thoroughly enjoyed himself & it was great to watch too.  We hope Hugo & Victor will come back again someday, they were fantastic!'

Gina Everett

'Tim, will you pass on my thanks to Hugo & Victor.  Ryan really enjoyed it this morning & I thought the session was fantastic!'

Kerrie McCrory

'Mate just wanted to say thanks for today.  Nathan had a real good day.  Thanks also to Hugo & Victor who made it enjoyable for us as parents too.  Nice to see kids having fun.  Cheers mate.'

Drew Kerr

The clinic took place at Dundela FC on Sunday 16 August.  The children that attended not only received 3 excellent hours of coaching from SL Benfica Academy coaches but returned to take part in the session for the coaches' clinic in the afternoon!

Coaching is changing, is your child receiving elite coaching based around modern new techniques set in a fun environment?  If not sign up to TWAcademy.Org.  Your child will receive great opportunities while still playing for their club!

Children registered with the TWSports.Org Group have been coached by PSV Eindhoven in April & now SL Benfica in August!  Our next step is to travel to one of these great clubs & play a match.  Do you want to be part of that?  Email me now!

You can purchase a DVD that will cover Hugo & Victor's sessions from the clinic & also include the coaching clinic & presentation.  For more information contact Tim Wareing on, 077 4012 0788 or by email.

STAFF COACHING

STAFF COACHING

In this game you never stop learning & what a pleasure it was to have PSV Eindhoven's, Martien Pennings fly into Belfast to be the guest of TWSports.Org.  On top of that to have top Dutch coach, Bert-Jan (BJ) Heijmans & Paul Cooper from Give Us Back Our Game we were guaranteed an action packed week of learning & exchanging ideas with each other.

From Radio interviews to coaching clinics & from Easter Fun Weeks to a SoccerSixes.Org tournament the week had everything!  The base would be a lovely cottage set between Dundonald & Comber.  What a base to talk football from morning to night & much more relaxing & personal than a hotel room.

The main bonus was that the TWSports.Org coaching team gained firsthand knowledge from coaches from one of the best youth development programmes in the world.  Everyone learnt from having these specialist coaches in the Northern Ireland from our experienced coaches' right down to our young coaches.

As a coach, a player & even a football supporter what more could you want than an action packed week of football?

After Martien's arrival into Belfast it was a quick transfer to BBC for an interview with Radio Ulster.  BJ & Paul arrived soon after before transferring to the cottage.  We were then joined by our resident camera man who would capture the week & produce a DVD.

Martien was first up for his clinic on Sunday at Orangefield FC.  He attracted coaches from London, Scotland & right across Northern Ireland.  We had a great mix of coaching abilities from young coaches through to professional coaches.  He gave us all an insight into grassroots football in Holland through to the blue print of PSV Eindhoven's Academy set up.  We were also lucky enough to watch a DVD made by the Technical Director from PSV of skills used by the players at the Academy.

A great session on small sided games was enjoyed from Give Us Back Our Game founder, Paul Cooper.  Bert-Jan Heijmans then provided a fantastic clinic on his Magic Rectangle.

Not only did our local coaches learn so much from these clinics but local children had the opportunity to play in one of the best Irish League grounds, Mourneview Park, & be coached by the Dutch!

For more details about the DVD made or for further details about TWSports.Org & the new Academy contact Tim Wareing now on, 077 4012 0788 or by email.

EASTER SUCCESS

EASTER SUCCESS

Children across Northern Ireland had the opportunity to play at Glenavon's Mourneview Park & at the Civil Service grounds in Dundonald this Easter.

5-16 year olds enjoyed age related games delivered by our excellent team of coaches along with having some great Dutch coaches' work with them.  At the same time footage was shot for a TWSports.Org DVD!

Along with top quality coaching, small sided games were used across the centres.  The European Cup had a little extra excitement around it as each team was given 5 million to spend on the European Player of the Year or they could buy their very own coach!  Watch out for these new methods being brought into our Mini Soccer classes!

If you missed out you can sign up to one of our highly successful Mini Soccer classes that operate across the province.  Contact Tim Wareing for further details on, 077 4012 0788 or by email.

The TWAcademy.Org will launch in May for elite coaching & development.  Children can now apply for a trial.  Invitation letters will be sent out this week.  More details can be found from the website.

Advantage Young Business Award Winner 2009

Advantage Young Business Award Winner 2009

Thirty year old Tim Wareing of Castlereagh based TWSports.Org Mini Soccer Centres, has been recognised by Advantage NI and Invest Northern Ireland for being amongst the most successful and inspirational young entrepreneurs in the Castlereagh area.  Funded by Invest NI, Advantage NI celebrates the spirit of enterprise that is alive and kicking in young people aged 16-30.

TWSports offers children the opportunity to play football in a pressure free environment, and welcomes children from as young as two to sixteen to join in.  The business has been extended to reach children and coaches around the world by utilising their web based products.

Football has always been a passion and hobby for Tim Wareing.  Though it was after he completed his football qualifications and observed the lack of youth development in sport and football that he decided to put all his interests and energy into starting up his own business.

Tim’s business has a strong customer base and he believes this is down to the fact that parents know that their children will meet new friends, have fun and develop their skills with highly qualified coaches at an affordable price.  This Easter will be an exciting time for the soccer centre as TWSports welcomes Martien Pennings of Dutch side PSV Eindhoven to deliver a coaching clinic for Northern Ireland coaches and children.

Sharon Polson of Invest NI’s Entrepreneurship Development Team, said: “By supporting initiatives which encourage our young entrepreneurs to further develop their ideas and grow their businesses, we can help increase the number and quality of locally-owned businesses, create wealth and strengthen the Northern Ireland economy.

"Many local young people have started successful businesses in recent years. These entrepreneurs are role models and it is important that they are recognised for their achievements."

As TWSports goes from strength to strength Tim is still not content with stopping here, as he sets his sights high for the future of his business - just as any entrepreneur would!    He intends to continue the high standards he has set for child and coach development in Northern Ireland but he also aims to franchise his product further afield.  He would even one day love to own his own indoor arena.  With ambition like this it is easy to see why TWSports has been awarded an Advantage Young Business Award.

If like Tim, you are under thirty one and are running your own business, or, if you are simply interested in finding out more about starting your own business, Advantage NI wants to hear from you. Advantage NI provides start up support and guidance specifically for young people aged 16-30 through a suite of programmes including Business Boot Camp, Ignite, The Big Idea and The Advantage Young Business Awards and what’s more, they’re all free. BELFAST BOY

BELFAST BOY

The following article appeared in world wide coaching magazine, Soccer Coaching International. The article is written by Paul Cooper from the 'Give us back our Game' Campaign.

Football in Northern Ireland has been on the up in recent years with the international side claiming some big scalps at Windsor Park. Spain, Sweden and of course England have all been beaten and they have been close to qualifying for a major event, something they have not achieved since the heady days of the 1982 and 1986 World Cups. David Healy, their prolific striker, also became the first player to score thirteen goals in a European Championship qualifying campaign. But what was happening at grassroots and in children's football across Northern Ireland? Paul Cooper from SoccerCoachingInternational went on a four day fact finding mission.

By: Paul Cooper

Tim Wareing

I had met a young coach from Belfast called Tim Wareing who made an immediate impact on me both in terms of a coach and person. When Tim invited me over to see the work he was doing at youth level, I was already on my way to the airport before the phone was set down. Tim played for Saintfield United before moving onto Agape to play under Sam Watterson. It was the late Watterson that got him involved in coaching and it was under his guidance that Tim set up Castlereagh Colts which was the youth development side at Agape. During this time Wareing got his UEFA B Licence and fixed up friendly fixtures with the like of Glasgow Rangers, Leeds and Fulham. Tim has always aimed high as he always wants the best for his charges.

Later Tim joined Lisburn Distillery as youth coach before being appointed Academy Director at the club and a couple of years ago obtained his A Licence. The young coach was very keen to do more football in the community and set up mini soccer centres across Northern Ireland through the coaching company he set up called TWSports.Org with the result that now hundreds of smiling boys & girls have the opportunity to play for fun.

East Belfast

This was my first visit to Northern Ireland although I already felt as if I knew it, as while growing up it was never off our screens at tea-time. The early evening news was full of many familiar names and places, though sadly nearly all were linked to the troubles. I was staying with Tim, his partner and their children in East Belfast, only a few hundred yards from where George Best lived and where George's father, Dickie still lives in the family home on Burren Way. Tim drove me around the Cregagh Estate, and to see the field and streets where the great man played as a child was inspiring. A couple of nights later Tim organised a World Cup 4 v 4 on the estate with the local children. With the floodlights on the Astro pitch, lighting up the autumn sky and with George Best's mural looming out from the side of an adjacent house, you felt that the spirit of the man was still living inside these local kids from the Cregagh, playing with smiles as wide as the River Lagan that flows through the city.

For several days I followed Tim and his coaches around Northern Ireland, to Belfast, Larne, Carrickfergus and Lisburn to name just a few places. We visited schools, play groups and leisure centres there with young kids from 5-13 playing football. The ingredients were simple, lots of fun, lots of touches of the ball and skills. Everywhere we went the children were hungry to play, trying moves and feints without a care in the world. The environment was so positive and the children were encouraged to show what they could do and express themselves at all time. Every six weeks they have a World Cup competition which the children love. As well as these mini soccer centres Tim also runs Toddler Soccer sessions for the really young ones, where they learn to fall in love with the game.

For the more gifted players there is the opportunity to join the Lisburn Distillery Academy. Tim and the coaches at the club have been very careful to create a culture of skilful play and creativity at the Academy. Children are encouraged to play the game how it should be played. The training I saw was full of inventive play with players taking on opponents in many 1 v 1 situations and neat passages of passing play with good movement off the ball. I don't remember ever visiting a club or district and see so many happy kids, but Tim's love for the game is incredibly infectious.

Tim's achievements in stimulating youth soccer in Northern Ireland are quite staggering and with the foundations being laid deep, the omens, (as long as he gets the support he deserves) look promising.

DUTCH CLASS

DUTCH CLASS

One word to sum up my trip to Holland & the Dutch people, 'quality!'

The trip from start to finish was a huge success & very enjoyable. To see a different football culture is a fantastic experience & goes to show how far we really are behind in this country.

Our week started in Amsterdam with a 2 day visit to Ajax. We enjoyed the tour of the Amsterdam ArenA & then took in the first team training. I approached one of the coaches to enquire if we could come in & observe the training. He immediately responded, 'yes'. A prime example of how accommodating & welcoming the Dutch are.

The facilities are second to none, maybe something you would expect at a top European side but not what you would expect at Amateur Clubs - more on that soon!

We viewed the sessions & took some video footage. We also got to meet a number of the first team players including Edgar Davids. After training we took a short stroll over to the famous Ajax Academy. Again facilities to be envy of.

Our trip then took us south to our Hotel based near Eindhoven. Over the 4 days we visited top Amateur Clubs, Geldrop AEK & vv Schijndel. These clubs would be the equivalent of Northern Ireland's Premier Amateur League teams but that is were the comparisons end. The facilities & presentations included the following;

  • Approximately a dozen full size grass pitches at each venue owned by the Club.
  • The main pitch included a stand & seating.
  • 2 x 3rd generation pitches with floodlights.
  • Each Club had between 40-60 teams!
  • Bar & restaurant.
  • Balcony / upstairs viewing lounge.
  • Over 40 volunteers working on a daily basis.
  • Amateur Clubs inform professional teams of any youth talent to progress the child.
  • Clubs & Coaches more concerned on youth players' development & progression in football rather than holding them back.
  • They work with the professional Clubs.
  • Councils support them! One of the Clubs received 40,000 euros last year.
  • Due to having over 900 members they will build another 3rd generation pitch.

We were lucky enough to watch the PSV first team training & view their terrific facilities. We also received a presentation from their Academy Director, the same presentation that was given to ex England Manager Steve McClaren the day before! This was another example of how open & friendly the Dutch are.

We had time on the Saturday to watch William II Tilburg take on PSV U17's. After the game we had a presentation from Martien Pennings who eats, drinks & sleeps football! Also Harrie Biemans, a young coach at William II & Harry Drummond a young English man playing in Holland. That night we had the pleasure of having the two Harry's out with us. It was fascinating speaking to them about football in Holland. I honestly would love the opportunity to work in Holland in the future.

It does seem a world apart when you receive the support from the local football authorities & Councils along with the Amateur Clubs. Top grade facilities & volunteers at hand is another fantastic bonus that as a Coach you just want to be involved in.

I feel that people in this country are on their own agenda at times. Although I'm lucky to work with some great coaches at my Club & have a good team of Coaches at TWSports.Org. You just wonder why some people are really involved in youth football when you see them behave in such a manner on a Saturday morning. Why parents continue sending their children to certain Clubs to be abused & subjected to a poor education in football?

I feel that Councils & our Football Authorities should be doing more to develop & support youth groups. Instead they put people in positions on huge salaries & they get complacent. Then they do what they can to stop others developing & offering football (see the report on Belfast City Council on ToddlerSoccer.Org.) Yet in Holland they support & provide top class facilities from grass roots level.

Maybe that's why they have their country in the European Championships this summer & unfortunately why there will be no home nations.

My thanks must go to B.J. & Paul for the invite & their hard work. Also an extended thank you to all the coaches & friends that I had the pleasure of meeting.

UMBRO CHALLENGE CURTIS

UMBRO CHALLENGE CURTIS

Lisburn Distillery Under 11 player, Curtis Ritchie, recently took part in the Umbro Diamond Challenge. Curtis was selected from a TWSports.Org Summer Camp to represent Lisburn Distillery Academy. Curtis has supplied us with his story from the day.

"I travelled by car to get to the Olympia Leisure Centre. We walked into a gym to get into our teams. I was selected for the yellow team & Peter Thompson took my team.

We did lots of things like shooting, dribbling, 2 v 2's, agility & other things. I scored six out of ten shots past the Cliftonville goalkeeper. Philip Matthews was also their.

When I was teamed up in the 2 v 2's we won all of them. The day was very good so far, my mum & dad were there to watch me. We took a break & had some water to drink. We took the break for five minutes or so. We went to do some more stuff & then the day finished.

We all sat down & an Umbro director announced who won. He said that it was very tight & the red team won & my team came second. We got a free Umbro bag & got our picture taken.

It was a very fun day & I would like to go back next year. I also received a certificate from the IFA."

CHILD PROTECTION COURSE

CHILD PROTECTION COURSE

All TWSports.Org coaches & Lisburn Distillery Academy coaches attended & completed their Child Protection course on Monday 12 November at the New Grosvenor Stadium.

The course, run by Jim Grattan of the Irish Football Association, is essential for all coaches & volunteers to attend & update every 3 years. The course was delivered professionally & important issues were covered in a tactful way.

TWSports.Org recognises they have an important role to protect children & ensure that their staff are properly trained. Coaches & staff also have to complete a background check before working with children.

We feel by putting this into practice we can only improve the safety of how your child will be looked after.

Lisburn Distillery is one of the few Irish League Club's to ensure all their staff complete this very important course. This is one of the guidelines set out to be considered for the new invitational Irish Premier League.

We would like to thank Irwin Moore, child protection officer for Lisburn Distillery, for setting up the course. Also thanks to Jim Grattan of the IFA for delivering the course.

GIVE US BACK OUR GAME UPDATE

GIVE US BACK OUR GAME UPDATE

With kind permission Paul Cooper from GUBOG has allowed us to feature his write up from his recent visit to Northern Ireland. A full report will be featured in the magazine, Soccer Coaching International, in the New Year.

"If children grew up according to early indications, we would have nothing but geniuses"

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Belfast Boy

I first met Tim Wareing at the Repton seminar and since then have kept in touch. When he invited me over for four days to Belfast to show what he is doing for the campaign and for youth football as a whole in Northern Ireland, I jumped at the chance.

I stayed with Tim, his partner Leanne, and their family at their house on the same Cregagh estate where George Best was born and where his father still lives.

Tim has been a great supporter of the campaign and had organised 4v4 GUBOG sessions in all of his soccer schools across the country.

Tim and Leanne had taken me on an open top bus ride around Belfast, which took in all the trouble spots that had become so familiar from T.V. To contrast that with watching hundreds of children playing for fun from both sides of the community was truly inspiring.

The work done by this young man to promote football for all in Northern Ireland is the best work I have come across and his passion for the game has rubbed off on all the kids who play the most breathtaking football with smiles as wide as the River Lagan.

I saw hundreds of kids play at his TW Sports centres and also at Lisburn Distillery where he is the Academy Director.

The highlight was a Friday night session at the Cregagh Community Centre 200 yards from where George Best lived and within the shadow of one of the murals painted of the great man.

Tim is planning further events and we will work with him to organise a major event in Northern Ireland this summer.

"I have travelled extensively as both a football coach and writer and have found no one to match the passion Tim Wareing has for the game. His secret is that he has a deep knowledge about coaching but also a deep knowledge about children and how they develop. Very few coaches have both.

What Tim has achieved in Northern Ireland is nothing short of astonishing and the smiles on the children's faces are testimony to his outstanding work."

Paul Cooper - Founder of Give Us Back Our Game

HELP KEEP AVONIEL MINI SOCCER OPEN!

HELP KEEP AVONIEL MINI SOCCER OPEN!

Those that tuned into the Nolan Radio Show (5 July) would have heard our problem with the new charges being implemented by Belfast City Council.

Our Mini Soccer Centre at Avoniel has been operating for 4 years. Belfast City Council is now introducing private coaching fees. They now propose that each child that attends must pay £2 to Belfast City Council as well as TWSports.Org continuing to pay for the pitch.

This is forcing our Mini Soccer Centre to close. This is very disappointing as this Centre welcomes all boys & girls aged 5-13. Many walk to the centre & don't have access to a vehicle so will lose their weekly football sessions if we are forced to close the centre down by Belfast City Council.

This is crazy in a day & age where Council's know their problems in:

  • Child obesity
  • Anti social behaviour
  • Restricted activities for kids
  • & this is a service that allows children to make new friends & play football in a safe environment
  • Children from this group have also been selected for Lisburn Distillery Academy

Belfast City Council is forcing TWSports.Org to shut down a successful & popular children's activity programme.

We want your views & support, email us.

INTERNATIONAL 4 v 4 FUN DAY

INTERNATIONAL 4 v 4 FUN DAY

In association with, 'Give Us Back Our Game', Lisburn Distillery Academy held a 4 v 4 Fun Day on Sunday 17 June.

13 teams took part from our 2000 age group through to the 1997's. 2 separate tournaments took place. 50 boys & their parents enjoyed a great day of football.

In 2 hours no fewer than 262 goals were scored by all teams. Some fantastic football & skills were on display from all age groups.

Lisburn Distillery Manager, Paul Kirk & defender Stuart Thompson were present to support the event. They took the time to speak to children & parents while signing autographs & having their picture taken.

The event took place world wide with events happening across the U.K. & Ireland, the U.S.A., Canada, Australia, Sweden, India, Brunei & the Philippines.

Give Us Back Our Game was formed six months ago to highlight the problems of touchline behaviour in children's football & to create a more child and player centred environment through small sided games, including 4 v 4's.

The key issues are:

  • To give children, coaches, parents & teachers & anyone else involved in grassroots football a voice by lobbying governments, associations & other organisations in order to bring about change.
  • To highlight the rising 'win at all costs' culture that is slowly destroying the beautiful game.
  • To give the children back their game by including ALL children, making it fun & giving them the opportunity to 'play'.
  • To bring back the 'spirit' of the game & fair play.

The main thing that we want to hear is children's voices, calling, shouting, laughing & talking. They will play fun 4 v 4 & small sided games & take responsibility for 'their' game by refereeing their own matches.

Tim Wareing, event organiser, added, 'What a great day. 262 goals scored in 2 hours football! The children played some great football. We play small sided games throughout the Academy. We can see the develop in each individual. They have more touches on the ball & make more decisions while playing in all different positions. Our kids always play with smiles on their faces & are not afraid to try anything. Our philosophy is to let the kids play'.

If you played or spectated at the 4 v 4 day please forward your thoughts to, info@twsports.org.

Thank you to all the parents who assisted & supported the day. Also to Paul Kirk & Stuart Thompson for their attendance. A big thank you to the coaching team for their hard work throughout the season.

We look forward to continuing our support to, 'Give Us Back Our Game'.

PAUL KIRK BACKS TWSports.Org

PAUL KIRK BACKS TWSports.Org

Lisburn Distillery Manager Paul Kirk has backed TWSports.Org Mini Soccer Centres' programme & Head Coach Tim Wareing. The Irish Premier League Club has formed a link with TWSports.Org & Tim Wareing will now look to develop an Academy for the Whites.

'As Manager of Lisburn Distillery I am delighted to have formed a link with TWSports.Org & in particular Tim Wareing.

From the many Mini Soccer Centres currently run by TWSports.Org, boys & girls will be selected to join our Development Centres which will be set up by Tim Wareing.

Here boys & girls will receive expert coaching to further enhance their football talents. The prospect of such a venture is exciting to say the least & I look forward to participating at these Centres when they start.'

BARCA REPORT!

BARCA REPORT!

Tim Wareing enjoyed 5 days at FC Barcelona watching training sessions from youth teams through to senior team level. He was also shown round the Camp Nou & was present to see them lift the Spanish League title against Espanyol.

Tim Wareing said, "The game at the Camp Nou was the highlight of the trip. 110,000 people watched the derby game between Barca & Espanyol. The celebrations after the game were unbelievable. From my seat in the 2nd row, I was beside the sub benches, & was close enough to smell the freshly cut grass, hear the players talk & smell the champagne during the celebrations!"

The main reason for the trip was to exchange ideas & to see the training methods implemented in Europe. "The set up, as you would imagine, was simply astounding. Their junior stadium which hosts training sessions & the 'B' team is a 20,000 all-seater stadium! I've come away with some fresh ideas to put into practice & all bodes well towards the creation of the Lisburn Distillery Development Centres." Tim Wareing.
